BACKGROUND: Malignant femoral soft tissue tumors are occasionally resected together with the femoral nerves, but this can cause loss of knee extensor muscle activity. To the best of our knowledge, no previous reports have detailed the gait analysis of such cases in combination with electromyography. Herein, we report the gait analysis of a patient who underwent left groin synovial sarcoma and left femoral nerve resection 12 years ago. CASE PRESENTATION: We analyzed the gait of a 38-year-old man who was able to walk unaided after the resection of a synovial sarcoma in the left groin together with the ipsilateral femoral nerve. The muscle activities of the affected medial (MH) and lateral hamstrings (LH), and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius (GL) were increased during 50-75% of the stance phase. The hip flexion angle of the affected limb was smaller, and the ankle plantar flexion angle of the affected limb was larger than that of the non-affected limb. This means that in the affected limb, the hip and ankle angles were adjusted to prevent knee collapse, and the MH, LH, and GL muscles contributed in the mid- and late-stance phases. Moreover, we found that the hamstring and gastrocnemius of the affected limb worked together to keep the ipsilateral knee extended in the mid-stance phase and slightly flexed in the late-stance phase. CONCLUSIONS: Patients capable of walking after femoral nerve resection may control their hamstrings and gastrocnemius muscles collaboratively to prevent ipsilateral knee collapse in the mid- and late-stance phases.

An important factor in the emergence and progression of osteosarcoma (OS) is the dysregulated expression of microRNAs (miRNAs). Transcription factor 7-like 1 (TCF7L1), a member of the T cell factor/lymphoid enhancer factor (TCF/LEF) transcription factor family, interacts with the Wnt signaling pathway regulator ß-catenin and acts as a DNA-specific binding protein. This study sought to elucidate the impact of the interaction between miR-329-3p and TCF7L1 on the growth and apoptosis of OS and analyze the regulatory expression relationship between miRNA and mRNA in osteosarcoma cells using a variety of approaches. MiR329-3p was significantly downregulated, while TCF7L1 was considerably up-regulated in all examined OS cell lines. Additionally, a clinical comparison study was performed using the TCGA database. Subsequently, the regulatory relationship between miR-329-3p and TCF7L1 on the proliferation and apoptosis of OS cells was verified through in vitro and in vivo experiments. When miR-329-3p was transfected into the OS cell line, the expression of TCF7L1 decreased, the proliferation of OS cells was inhibited, the cytoskeleton disintegrated, and the nucleus condensed to form apoptotic bodies. The expression of proteins that indicate apoptosis increased simultaneously. The cell cycle was arrested in the G0/G1 phase, and the G1/S transition was blocked. The introduction of miR-329-3p also inhibited downstream Cyclin D1 of the Wnt pathway. Xenograft experiments indicated that the overexpression of miR-329-3p significantly inhibited the growth of OS xenografts in nude mice, and the expression of TCF7L1 and c-Myc in tumor tissues decreased. MiR-329-3p was significantly reduced in OS cells and played a suppressive role in tumorigenesis and proliferation by targeting TCF7L1 both in vitro and in vivo. Osteosarcoma cell cycle arrest and pathway inhibition were observed upon the regulation of TCF7L1 by miR-329-3p. Summarizing these results, it can be inferred that miR-329-3p exerts anticancer effects in osteosarcoma by inhibiting TCF7L1.

RATIONALE: Precision medicine and tumor-agnostic treatment strategies have recently been promoted for clinical use. One of the most successful treatments in patients with neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) fusion-positive tumors is targeting the tropomyosin receptor kinase (TRK) with an inhibitor. The TRK inhibitors, larotrectinib, and entrectinib, have been approved in many countries. Nevertheless, the most effective administration regimen for these TRK inhibitors is uncertain. To date, no reports have shown the efficacy of sequential treatment with larotrectinib and entrectinib in patients with NTRK fusion-positive tumors. In this report, we present a patient with NTRK fusion-positive sarcoma arising from the anterior mediastinum, with tumor progression after 4 months of entrectinib use. The patient took larotrectinib subsequently and maintained disease control for more than 21 months. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old female visited a physician because she experienced difficulty in breathing and chest and back pain with no obvious cause 2 months ago. Computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy was performed at a district general hospital, and histopathological examination revealed a small round cell tumor. She was referred to our hospital, and a second CT-guided biopsy was performed to confirm the pathological diagnosis. Considering the results of the histopathological examination, Ewing sarcoma was suspected, but a specific fusion gene was not detected due to poor quality specimens. DIAGNOSES: After 3 regimens of cytotoxic chemotherapy, biopsy was repeated, and specimens were analyzed using next-generation sequencing. The PHF20-NTRK1 fusion gene was detected, and the tumor was finally diagnosed as an NTRK fusion-positive sarcoma. INTERVENTIONS: She was administered the TRK inhibitor entrectinib, but the tumor started to grow after 4 months of medication, and she stopped taking entrectinib. After 1 cycle of cytotoxic chemotherapy, another TRK inhibitor, larotrectinib, was administered. OUTCOMES: Her stable disease was maintained for more than 21 months. Here, we have shown that sequential administration of both drugs can be effective. LESSONS: In the treatment of NTRK fusion-positive tumors, there are cases in which 2 approved first-generation TRK inhibitors can be used sequentially.

We elucidated the mechanism through which the reduced expression of miR-152 leads to the overexpression of its target cyclin-dependent kinase-5 activator 1 (CDK5R1) in Ewing's sarcoma (ES) cells and the role of this mechanism in the proliferation of ES cells. To explore possible oncogenic factors in ES, we conducted microarray-based investigation and profiled the changes in miRNA expression and their effects on downstream mRNAs in five ES cell lines and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). miR-152 was significantly downregulated, while cyclin-dependent kinase-5 activator 1 (CDK5R1) expression was significantly upregulated in all tested ES cells as compared to hMSCs. The overexpression of CDK5R1 led to the activation of CDK5, enabling the phosphorylation of retinoblastoma protein and persistent overexpression of CCNE. Moreover, miR-152 suppressed cell proliferation via cell cycle retardation, and its upregulation reduced tumor size and CCNE expression in tumor tissues. The overexpression of cyclin E (CCNE) has been detected in ES cells, but the detailed mechanisms have not been previously elucidated. These findings identify the miR152-CDK5R1 signaling axis as a critical mechanism for tumorigenesis that may serve as a new therapeutic target in Ewing's sarcoma. We believe that our results will aid in the development of effective treatment strategies for patients with ES.

Heat shock protein (HSP) 90 plays a crucial role in correcting the misfolded three-dimensional structure of proteins, assisting them in folding into proper conformations. HSP90 is critical in maintaining the normal functions of various proteins within cells, as essential factors for cellular homeostasis. Contrastingly, HSP90 simultaneously supports the maturation of cancer-related proteins, including mesenchymal epithelial transition factor (MET) within tumor cells. All osteosarcoma cell lines had elevated MET expression in the cDNA array in our possession. MET, a tyrosine kinase receptor, promotes proliferation and an anti-apoptotic state through the activation of the MET pathway constructed by HSP90. In this study, we treated osteosarcoma cells with an HSP90 inhibitor, 17-demethoxygeldanamycin hydrochloride (17-DMAG), and assessed the changes in the MET signaling pathway and also the antitumor effect of the drug. The cell cycle in osteosarcoma cells administered 17-DMAG was found to be halted at the G2/M phase. Additionally, treatment with 17-DMAG inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. Inhibition of tumor cell proliferation was also observed in an in vivo model system, mice that were treated with 17-DMAG. Based on the results of this study, we were able to confirm that 17-DMAG promotes inhibition of osteosarcoma cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis by inhibition of MET, a protein highly expressed in osteosarcoma cells. This approach may be useful for the establishment of a new treatment strategy for patients resistant to the standard treatment for osteosarcoma.

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is a highly promising electrolyte material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). We investigated the conductivity-enhancing effect of nanosized YSZ to explore key techniques to decrease the operating temperature. YSZ nanoparticles ranging from 2 to 4 nm were synthesized with oleate groups by the hydrothermal method at various oleate/metal ion ratios (Ole/M = 1.00, 0.75, and 0.50). The nanoparticles were sintered, and the ionic conductivities were evaluated. The 1.00 Ole/M sample exhibited high dispersibility in cyclohexane and showed a nearly monodispersed distribution. The other samples possessed agglomerated nanoparticles. The sintered YSZ nanoparticles had densities of 3.36-2.80 g/cm3 and ionic conductivities of 2.52-1.16 mS/cm at 750 °C, which are higher than those of commercial 8 mol % YSZ. Furthermore, the sintered YSZ nanoparticles exhibited higher activation energies than the commercial samples in the lower temperature range (550-650 °C). The ionic conductivity enhancement despite the high activation energy is likely due to the increased grain boundary volume. This study demonstrated the successful production of YSZ with high ionic conductivity and sinterability upon sintering at 1050 °C using YSZ nanoparticles.

Treatment of malignant tumors, such as rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), can improve overall survival (OS). It is time-consuming and expensive for patients to obtain benefits from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with OS as the primary end-point. Therefore, another surrogate end-point is necessary; however, there is no report on the surrogacy analysis of RMS. In this study, we performed a systematic review of RCTs, involving patients with newly diagnosed RMS, and 11 RCTs were identified. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the surrogacy of intermediate end-points for OS. The correlations between surrogate end-points and OS were investigated using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (ρ). The coefficient of determination (R2) was employed to measure the strength of the association. A total of 5183 patients were randomly allocated to 34 treatment groups. A marginal correlation (R2 = 0.281, ρ = 0.445) between the hazard ratios (HRs) for event-free survival (EFS) and OS was observed. In patients with localized RMS, the EFS HR had a weaker correlation with OS HR in the sensitivity analysis than that in the primary analysis. Overall, the surrogacy of EFS for OS cannot be confirmed.

Background: Patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) are known to have abnormal pelvic morphologies; however, rotation of innominate bone features remains unclear. Thus, we investigated innominate bone rotation in patients with DDH by measuring the associated angles and distances using three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography. Methods: We defined four straight lines in pelvic 3D models: from the anterior superior iliac spine to the posterior superior iliac spine, from the anterior inferior iliac spine to the posterior inferior iliac spine, from the pubic tubercle to the ischial spine, and from the pubic tubercle to the ischial tuberosity. Similarly, we measured the angles formed by these lines using the vertical axis of the anterior pelvic plane on the horizontal plane and the horizontal axis on the sagittal plane. Additionally, we measured the distances between the femoral head centers and the acetabular centers in the coronal plane. Results: The difference in internal rotation angle between the superior and inferior parts of the iliac bone was significantly lower, by approximately 1.7°, in the DDH group than in the control group (p = 0.007); the difference between the inferior and superior parts of the ischiopubic bone was significantly higher, by approximately 1.5°, in the DDH group (p < 0.001). In the sagittal plane, the sum of the superior aspect of the iliac bone and the inferior aspect of the ischium was significantly lower in the DDH group (p = 0.001) than in the control group. The distances between the femoral heads and the acetabula were significantly greater in the DDH group than in the control group (p = 0.03, p < 0.01, respectively). Conclusions: Patients with DDH had a more internally rotated ilium and ischiopubic bone than normal individuals; however, it should be emphasized that internal rotation was reduced near the acetabulum, and the acetabulum was shifted laterally. Similarly, it was shown that patients with DDH had different rotations of the ilium and ischiopubic bone in the sagittal plane.

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of bone sarcoma in the distal femur, wide-margin resection and knee reconstruction with tumor endoprosthesis are standard therapies. Extra-articular knee resection is required in cases of tumor invasion of the knee joint; however, the incidence of complications, such as aseptic loosening, prosthesis infection, and implant failure, is higher than that following intra-articular knee resection. To the best of our knowledge, there are three reports of patellar dislocations after replacement of a tumor endoprosthesis. CASE SUMMARY: A 36-year-old man with no significant past medical history was admitted to our institution with continuous pain in his left knee for 4 mo. An open biopsy was performed, and the patient was diagnosed with a left distal femoral malignant bone tumor. Extra-articular knee resection and knee reconstruction with a tumor endoprosthesis were performed. Although the alignment of the tumor prosthesis was acceptable, knee instability was noticed postoperatively. The axial radiographic view of the patellar and computed tomography showed lateral patellar dislocation at 4 wk postoperatively. The patient had to undergo a lateral release and proximal realignment. He could perform his daily activities at 9 mo postoperatively. Radiography revealed no patellar re-dislocation. CONCLUSION: Proximal realignment may be considered during primary surgery if there is an imbalance in the forces controlling the patellar tracking.

A Cu2O film is prepared on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrate for a bending sensor using the spin-spray method, a facile and low-environmental-load solution process. The Cu2O bending sensor shows high sensitivity and high resolution not only over a wide range of curvatures (0 < κ < 0.21 mm-1) but also for very small curvature changes (Δκ = ∼ 0.03 mm-1). The bending response of the sensor exhibited a curvature change of high linearity with a good gauge factor (18.2) owing to the grain-boundary resistance and piezoresistive effects of the fabricated Cu2O film. In addition, the sensor possesses good repeatability, stability, and long-term (>30 days) and mechanical fatigue durability (1000 bending-release cycles). The sensor is capable of detailed monitoring of large- and small-scale human motions, such as finger bending, wrist bending, nodding, mouth opening/closing, and swallowing. In addition, excellent stability and repeatability of the monitoring performance is observed over a wide range of motion angles and speeds. All of these results demonstrate the potential of the flexible bending sensor based on the Cu2O film as a candidate for healthcare monitoring and wearable electronics.

BACKGROUND: Plain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are useful for diagnosing adverse local tissue reactions after metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (THA), but metal artifacts can hamper radiological assessments near the implants. We sought to clarify the usefulness of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) CT and MRI in the periprosthetic region, which is difficult to assess after THA due to metal artifacts. METHODS: We performed preoperative 18F-FDG-PET/CT and 18F-FDG-PET/MRI, as well as plain CT and MRI, in 11 metal-on-metal THA patients who underwent revision surgery. RESULTS: Most patients showed high FDG uptake in the metal artifact areas and pseudotumors in the 18-F-FDG-PET/CT and 18-F-FDG-PET/MRI scans. Intraoperative intra-articular macroscopic and histopathological intra-articular granulation tissue findings were suggestive of adverse local tissue reaction. CONCLUSIONS: The enhanced uptake in the metal artifact areas seemed to reflect adverse local tissue reaction. Therefore, 18F-FDG-PET/CT and 18-F-FDG-PET/MRI can be useful for the auxiliary diagnosis of adverse local tissue reactions after metal-on-metal THA.

Interaction with surrounding healthy cells plays a major role in the growth and metastasis of osteosarcoma. In this study, we hypothesized that humoral factors, which do not require direct contact with cells, are involved in the interaction between osteosarcoma and the surrounding cells. We identified the humoral factor involved in the association between tumor cells and surrounding normal cells using a co-culture model and investigated the significance of our findings. When human osteosarcoma cells (MG63) and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were co-cultured and comprehensively analyzed for changes in each culture group, we found that the expression of chemokine (CC motif) ligand 26 (CCL26) was significantly enhanced. We also analyzed the changes in cell proliferation in co-culture, enhanced interaction with administration of recombinant CCL26 (rCCL26), reduced interaction with administration of anti-CCL26 antibodies, changes in invasive and metastatic abilities. CCL26 levels, motility, and invasive capability increased in the co-culture group and the group with added rCCL26, compared to the corresponding values in the MG63 single culture group. In the group with added CCL26 neutralizing antibodies, CCL26 level decreased in both the single and co-culture groups, and motility and invasive ability were also reduced. In a nude mice lung metastasis model, the number of lung metastases increased in the co-culture group and the group with added rCCL26, whereas the number of tumors were suppressed in the group with added neutralizing antibodies compared to those in the MG63 alone. This study identified a possible mechanism by which osteosarcoma cells altered the properties of normal cells to favorably change the microenvironment proximal to tumors and to promote distant metastasis.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to clarify the iliac anatomy in developmental dysplasia of the hip using three-dimensional computed tomography. METHODS: The distance between two points along each anatomical portion of the ilium, including the acetabular center, were compared between patients in the dysplasia and control groups. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the upper part of the ilium between the groups. However, three distances that included the acetabular center were significantly shorter in the dysplasia group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that bone dysplasia occurs in the ilium near the acetabulum, not in the iliac wings.

BACKGROUND: It is very rare for clear cell sarcomas (CCS) to arise in the bone. During diagnosis, it is important to distinguish primary CCS of bone from bone metastasis of melanoma because this difference fundamentally changes the therapeutic options. Recently, characteristic fusion genes of CCS have been detected using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or direct sequencing which allowed to distinguish CCS from melanoma. However, there was no study applying these analyses with positive results. In this case, we describe the use of fusion gene analysis to diagnose a primary CCS of the bone. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old male presented with a four-months history of left knee pain. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion in the left femoral medial epicondyle. Histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed proliferating oval or rounded cells. These cells had clear cytoplasm arranged in fascicles or compact nests with frequent deposits of brown pigment. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry analysis revealed that tumor cells were positive for S-100 protein, HMB-45, Melan-A, and SOX10. It stained negative for CD34 and BRAF v600e. Conclusively, detection of the EWSR1/ATF1 fusion gene using RT-PCR and direct sequencing confirmed that the lesion was a primary CCS of the bone. Wide-margin resection and reconstruction with a tumor endoprosthesis were performed. CONCLUSIONS: Herein, we diagnosed a rare case of primary CCS of the bone by detecting EWSR1/ATF1 fusion gene using RT-PCR and direct sequencing. Since fluorescence-in situ hybridization (FISH) and RT-PCR could show false positive by mainly due to technical problems, it is better to perform direct sequencing to confidently diagnose the tumor as a primary CCS especially at very rare site such as bone.

We herein report a case of osteomyelitis of the distal phalanx of the thumb of a 55-year-old man caused by Parvimonas micra and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Osteomyelitis often occurs in long bones and rarely occurs in the bones of the fingers. In addition, osteomyelitis of the finger frequently occurs after trauma or surgery, and blood-borne infection is very rare. P. micra and F. nucleatum, normal flora of the oral cavity, are very rare pathogenic bacteria of osteomyelitis except in periodontal disease, and there are no previous reports regarding the occurrence of osteomyelitis due to P. micra and F. nucleatum in the finger bones.

BACKGROUND: Studies comparing cementless and cemented cups are lacking, especially for revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the differences in implant accuracy between two fixation methods in revision THA. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 85 hips in 70 patients who underwent revision THA using a computed tomography (CT)-based navigation system. Among these, 53 hips underwent cementless THA and 32 hips underwent cemented THA. We measured cup inclination and anteversion using the Kyocera two-dimensional-template with X-ray (Japan-Kyocera, Shiga, Japan) and stem anteversion with CT. We calculated the combined anteversion [cup anteversion+0.7×stem anteversion]. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups with respect to definitive cup inclination and anteversion. The mean deviations in the inclination and anteversion angle were 40.3 ±â€¯4.3 and 19.6 ±â€¯6.2° in the cementless group and 40.5 ±â€¯3.3 and 17.1 ±â€¯5.1° in the cemented group. There were 11 outliers with respect to the Lewinnek safe zone in the cementless group and two in the cemented group (P = 0.072). Although there was no statistically significant difference, the number of safe zone outliers in the cemented group was less than that in the cementless group. CONCLUSION: We conclude that when using a navigation system for revision THA, high precision can be obtained for the cup placement angle with or without cement. However, it seems that a major error in the installation angle of the cup is less likely to occur when using a cemented cup than when using a cementless cup in revision THA with a navigation system.

This paper describes a simple, low-temperature, and environmentally friendly aqueous route for the layer-by-layer nanometric growth of crystalline α-Fe2O3. The formation mechanism involves alternative sequences of the electrostatic adsorption of Fe2+ ions on the surface and the subsequent onsite oxidation to Fe3+. A combination analysis of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that α-Fe2O3 is directly formed without post-growth annealing via designed chemical reactions with a growth rate of ca. 1.7 nm per deposition cycle. The obtained α-Fe2O3 layer exhibits electrocatalytic activity for water oxidation and, at the same time, insignificant photo-electrocatalytic response, indicating its defective nature. The electrocatalytic activity was tailored by annealing up to 500 °C in air, where thermal diffusion of Sn4+ into the α-Fe2O3 lattice from the substrate probably provides an increased electrical conductivity. The subsequent surface-modification with Ni(OH)2 lowers the overpotential (250 mV at 0.5 mA cm-2) in a 1 M KOH solution. These findings open direct growth pathways to functional metal oxide nanolayers via liquid phase atomic layer deposition.

BACKGROUND: In isolated acetabular revision surgery, surgeons must place the cup at an appropriate angle with various retained stem anteversion angles to prevent postoperative dislocation. For accurate acetabular cup position, various navigation systems have been used. Nevertheless, no publications have reported combined cup and stem anteversion and dislocation rates after isolated acetabular revision, especially comparing the use of navigation with manual implantation. Therefore we performed a retrospective comparative study to answer the following questions: (1) What is the combined anteversion after isolated acetabular revision with computed tomography-based navigation? (2) Does navigation improve the accuracy of cup angle and combined anteversion, (3) reduce dislocation rate, and (4) reduce operative time? HYPOTHESIS: A navigation system makes combined anteversion near the target angle in isolated acetabular revision. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 32 hips in 24 patients who underwent isolated acetabular revision total hip arthroplasty using computed tomography-based navigation system. The control group comprised 8 hips in 8 patients who underwent the same procedure without navigation. RESULTS: In the navigation group, average Widmer's combined anteversion was 39.0°±8.7° (range, 25.3°-56.6°). Cup positions were 40.3°±2.9° (range, 29.0°-49.0°) for radiographic abduction angle, 24.3°±8.0° (range, 4.6°-42.6°) for radiographic anteversion. In the control group, Widmer's combined anteversion was 47.2°±15.1° (range, 27.0°-74.3°, p=0.048). The average cup positions for radiographic abduction angle and anteversion were 36.7°±8.9° (range, 24.5°-54.9°) and 29.1°±7.3° (range, 17.2°-38.8°), respectively (p>0.05). Widmer's combined anteversion deviated from the target angle by a smaller amount in the navigation group than in the control group: errors in measurement of Widmer's combined anteversion were 7.2°±5.1° (range, 0.74°-19.6°) in the navigation group and 13.9°±11.1° (range, 3.6°-37.3°) in the control group (p=0.135). Postoperative dislocation occurred in none of the 32 hips (0%) in the navigation group and in one of the 8 hips (12.5%) in the control group (p=0.2). DISCUSSION: Using the navigation system, combined anteversion is made near the target angle in isolated acetabular revision surgery and more accurately than manual implantation. These results should be considered as preliminary since this is a limited cohort, but it brings new knowledge in navigation considering the very limited number of series using of navigation in isolated cup revision of total hip arthroplasty. In addition this is the first study to investigate combined cup and stem anteversion in isolated acetabular revision. The use of CT-scan is helpful to diagnose error in stem anteversion and to adapt the orientation of the new cup. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III, Retrospective case control study.

BACKGROUND: Navigation systems are an effective tool to improve the installation accuracy of the cup in primary total hip arthroplasty. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a computed tomography-based navigation system in achieving optimal installation accuracy of implants in revision total hip arthroplasty and to clarify the usefulness of the navigation system. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 23 hips in 23 patients who underwent revision total hip arthroplasty using a computed tomography-based navigation system; the control group comprised 33 hips in 33 patients who underwent revision total hip arthroplasty without a navigation system. RESULTS: The average cup position with the navigation system was 40.0° ± 3.7° in radiographic abduction angle, 18.8° ± 4.8° in radiographic anteversion, and 41.2° ± 8.9° in combined anteversion; without the navigation system, the average cup position was 38.7° ± 6.1°, 19.0° ± 9.1°, and 33.6° ± 20.5°, respectively. The achievement rate of cup positioning within the Lewinnek safe zone was not significantly different between the navigation group (82.6%) and control group (63.6%). In contrast, the achievement rate of cup positioning within the Widmer combined anteversion guidelines was significantly greater in the navigation group (78.3%) than in the control group (48.0%, p = 0.029). Furthermore, outlier cases in the navigation group had a smaller variance of deviation from the optimal cup position than those in the control group did. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that the use of navigation for revision total hip arthroplasty improved cup positioning and reduced the range of outliers. Improvement of cup placement accuracy influenced the installation of the stem and also improved the achievement rate of combined anteversion. Thus, a computed tomography-based navigation system is very useful for surgeons when placing the cup within the target angle in revision total hip arthroplasty.

Ceria (CeO2) wires with lengths of 6 µm and diameters of tens of nanometers are fabricated through the anisotropic growth of mesocrystals. In the gas-liquid precipitation process, an aqueous Ce(NO3)3 solution is used as a starting material and NH3 gas is used to induce CeO2 precipitation at the gas-liquid interface. CeO2 mesocrystals, formed by this process at 60 °C, grow in the direction of 〈011〉 into micrometer length wires exposing {001} and {011} on their side walls. It is shown that the initial pH of the starting material solution is a key parameter to attain anisotropic growth of the CeO2 mesocrystals. We thus propose the formation mechanism of micrometer length-CeO2 wires from mesocrystals.
